Spring 2015_Adventure Three: What can you do, what do you want to do, and who can help?

As you are learning this semester, much of what we learn and do is built atop a finite amount of experiences, both academic and non-academic. At the beginning of every service learning experience, it could be said that we are simply creating some stuff that will help our communities (our "places") learn some stuff that will hopefully connect to other stuff that they already do and know.  In this way, we are creators, and so are they.  We give to each other, making one another "better".

We rarely do this alone, however.  In fact, we often have lots and lots of creative help all around us, and it could be argued that many of our friends, family, networks, teachers, peers, etc., are simply waiting for us to create something with them too.
The above video is about kids, and the students that you are surrounded by at the university are a bit older, but the lesson is salient.

According to Google, it takes about .46 seconds to find 13,000,000 results for the following search terms: globe's most pressing problems.  Bing found 35,300,000.  That's a lot. The first hit on both engines will lead to HERE.  It's interesting.  Take a look.

Now, think back to your Via Character Survey (if you have not done one just yet, click HERE, and begin to plan what it is that you are going to do to make your place a better one.

Remember, as pointed out in the video, taking creative risks can be frightening!  But you must try, and trying is a major part of Mapping Your Plan.

To help with mapping your plan, take a few minutes to respond to the following prompts. Try to answer each prompt in just a few sentences:
  • What is Servant Leadership?
  • What is Service Learning and Civic Engagement?
  • How does this work impact citizenship?
Responses to these prompts are due at the beginning of Adventure Four.

A servant leader is a person who wants to serve first, and serve others as a number one priority. They promote a sense of community and share the power of decision making. Service learning is a learning experience in which we as students volunteer in community based projects. Outcomes to doing these projects lead to better self-esteem, insight into self, personal growth and development and many more. It's something that everyone should attempt at least once in there lifetime.

Servant leadership is a voluntary first step to becoming a better leader. It starts with a small act of service and develops into a full sense of leadership. Service learning is an opportunity to use service to learn new skills and to discover how to interact with the world. Civic leadership is the duty of each person to lead actively, or by example, in doing what is good for society. All of this work makes us better citizens and helps us better the world.

Servant Leadership is when a person is a leader and the leader helps out the group. This leader makes team-work happen and lets everyone make a decision together.
Service Learning is a project that a student can take part in so students can better their understanding on how the services provide better learning. Civic engagement is when the student takes part in a service that helps out the community.
This work impacts citizenship because the work is helping out people in need and is also helping the student learn more about how they can help and affect the world.

  4. Servant Leadership is a person who is out on the field doing work and is also the leader. This idea contradicts the original idea of a leader being above the servants not doing labor and viewing the workers as objects.

Service learning is the act of helping out the community by solving problems and gaining the result of learning problem solving as well as growing as a person from the service.

This work will help a person gain values and knowledge. Seeing and working with unpleasant things with poor conditions will help one be humbled and gain a sense of accomplishment from making a difference.

  5. Servant Leadership is being a servant of the community first, and a leader second. This means to help others before you try to take charge of anything and helping those who need help.

Service learning is when a student learns while serving his community by reflecting and thinking about the community based projects that they participate in. Civic Engagement is when you engage with the community around you and volunteer to help and provide civil services.

This work helps one feel more connected to the community, as they are helping to build and pull the community together. It makes someone feel more like a citizen as they are contributing to their community and fellow citizens.
